I was just thinking of how much I love poetry, but the weird thing is that I can't stand too much of it.

You've surprised me.

Really? For me it's just self-expression. If I wasn't me I wouldn't read mine!

A friend keeps sending me poetry books because he thinks I spend my time reading poetry but I haven't the heart to tell him that I only occasionally flick through them.

I somehow imagined you reading lots of poetry. Funny the ideas we get about people.
Well, I don't know why you wouldn't read yours. I pop over now and again and read a few at a time and I must say you've written some really good ones.-

There you go! A lot of bloggers think they know me so well. That's why I started "Dafter's" blog last year. When I decided to come clean about my alter ego there were so many gob-smacked bloggers around.

I'm with you. I write it for myself, but I don't really read that much.
I've always felt a bit guilty about that
- glad I'm not the only one

A bit like, I enjoy performing in musicals, but I'm not that bothered about going to watch them (usually)

If I'm going to spectate, I prefer 'straight' theatre.
But I do love a good sing-song

I think the intensity of some poetry makes it impossible to want to read too much of it...I can't...big hugs..

There can be so much in so few words, can't there? That's if it's good peotry, of course. If it's rubbish then there can be nothing in a great many words.

A poem once every three months. That's my lot!
If I read poetry every day - I'd lose touch with the spontaneous reaction I feel as I read the poem.
Hope you are taking things easy and in small bites!

There have been times when I haven't read poetry for years. There were times when I read lots, too. Now I like to read it occasionally. It does help to preserve the spontaneous reaction - I agree.
And no, I'm not taking things easy. I've got a little energy and I'm doing my best to use as much of it as I can before it disappears again. XXX

I believe there is a saying, "A little of what you fancy does you good" so the idea that you like poetry, but not too much of it, makes total sense to me.

You're quite right.
